How To Increase The Efficiency Of Your Furnace

Posted on: 4 September 2015

Is your furnace losing power? Have you noticed reduced airflow? If so, you might need to invest in a new heating unit. However, the problem might not be so severe. In many cases, reduced airflow can be a result of clogged registers, dirty filters and loose hoses. This article explains three ways to make sure your furnace is running as efficiently as possible. After running these tests, you should notice increased airflow.

Replace the Filter

One of the quickest and easiest ways to increase the airflow of your furnace is to clean or replace the filter. You can easily access the filter without any tools. It is usually located behind a hinged door near the back or side of the filter. If you pull the filter out and it looks perfectly clean, just put it back in place. However, if it is dusty and dirty, replace it with a new one. Filters are very affordable and easy to find at most home-improvement stores. To make sure you get the right size, take the old filter into the store with you.

Clean the Air Registers

Another simple way to increase the airflow of your heating system is to clean the air registers and vents. You can easily remove the registers from the wall by just listening a couple screws. Most registers are attached to the wall with just two screws. You might notice dust and dirt buildup on the backside of the vents. For a thorough cleaning, you should soak them in water and wipe them down with the sponge. However, don't do this if you have wooden registers. Instead, wipe the wood down with a slightly damp rag.

Clean the Ducts

While the registers are removed from the wall, you should also take a look at the ducts. It's a flashlight to look deep inside the duct system. If you notice dust or grime buildup on the side walls, try to wipe it off. You can use a broom or long pole to get deep inside the duct. Dust will commonly build up along the ridge where it meets the wall. Be sure to inspect and clean this area thoroughly.

Always be sure to make the simple repairs to your heating system before you call in a furnace specialist. You can save yourself some money and improve the efficiency of your unit at the same time. In the long run, you could drastically improve energy efficiency of your furnace without having to spend any money at all.
